'Priest' starring Paul Bettany - trailer review

Priest Directed by: Scott Stewart Starring: Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet Rating: NR Release Date: March 4, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 4/10

MY THOUGHTS: As a fan of the original graphic novel, I'm always a little worried when I hear about an adaptation in progress. Well, with Priest I had plenty of time to be worried, then forget about being worried, so now I'm back at square one. News of this movie came a long time ago and now with the visual evidence to back me up, I'm rightfully worried again, especially considering it's the same director as Legion. Now, I could be pleasantly surprised by the end result. In fact, I'm hoping I will be, but it just sort of looks like Blade Runner and Dune had a love child with Blade. Sure, there are the sweeping landscapes and some cool special effects, but is that really enough? Plus, with the whole 3D gimmick, it's become pretty clear that there's no hope in selling this as a good movie, but that doesn't mean it still can't be a profitable one. I should've known if they'd tried to do an adaptation of Priest that it would be a difficult undertaking, but part of me wants to see if it's as bad as they're obvious attempts to sell it. Judging by the trailer, there's not much to save this movie, but I have a little faith that it could still be better than what this SFX-ridden, lowest common denominator trailer shows.
