'Devil' starring Chris Messina - trailer review

Devil Directed by: John Erick Dowdle Starring: Chris Messina, Geoffrey Arend, Logan Marshall-Green Rating: NR Release Date: September 17, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 6/10

MY THOUGHTS: I don't know why any movie would advertise "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan" at this point, but this doesn't look half-bad. There were some interesting choices made in the trailer, particularly the whole upside down camera thing, that I hope pay off in the movie or are given at least some sort of explanation, but I'm not holding my breath. One of the things that's completely either hit or miss for me in most movies is this whole "confined location" thing. By setting it in an elevator they could either make it really boring or give it the touch of claustrophobia to make the audience anxious. In short, there are a lot of things that could go wrong with this movie, even judging from this trailer, but I'm hoping against hope that Shyamalan doesn't fall into the same traps and patterns of his previous movies. But listen to me go on about Shyamalan when he's not even the director of the project. John Erick Dowdle has a lot to live up to, especially after fouling up Quarantine but it looks like he may be able to deliver on this one. Sure, the plot sounds a little goofy but if executed well (and this trailer does give me hope for the project) this could put Dowdle back on track with horror fans.
