'Gulliver's Travels' starring Jack Black - trailer review
Gulliver's Travels Directed by: Rob Letterman Starring: Jack Black, Amanda Peet, Emily Blunt Rating: NR Release Date: December 25, 2010
TRAILER SCORE: 3/10
MY THOUGHTS: It's the underachiever, slacker role that Jack Black was born to play. I mean, sure, it may not have been what Jonathan Swift had in mind when he first wrote the book, but who doesn't know how to do slacker like Black? Well... there are actually a few people I can think of that are less obnoxious, but it's a studio picture, what are you going to do? But before I can properly review this trailer, I must start with a little history about the movie, or rather, just one piece of trivia. Emily Blunt left Get Him to the Greek because it would be a scheduling conflict for this movie. According to Allen, that may be a blessing in disguise, but in looking at this trailer, it seems she didn't move on to much greener pasture. There are just so many problems I have with this trailer as it is, but I'm hoping some changes will occur before it hits the screen. For starters, Jack Black should be confined to the supporting role. I loved the 20 or so minutes of him in High Fidelity but can't stand him in much else when he grabs the lead. Secondly, and this may be semantics to some folks, it's called Gulliver's Travels. That letter "s" at the end, makes it plural. In the book, it's all about him traveling to at least four places and it's clearly making a statement about colonialism, but if the trailer's any indication, this movie's too dumbed down to be of much worth. The least I can do is at least point out that, at this point, it's really only Gulliver's Travel. Finally, the graphics and the 3D gimmick are just too painful to even go further. In the end, Gulliver's Travels looks like one hell of a shipwreck.
