'The Last Exorcism' starring Patrick Fabian - trailer review

The Last Exorcism Directed by: Daniel Stamm Starring: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr Rating: NR Release Date: August 27, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 5/10

MY THOUGHTS: As I read the plot synopsis, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. The setting of Louisiana is usually the place for some of the best Gothic horror, but it’s clear as early as 15 seconds in that this won’t tap into that. Don’t get me wrong, I was impressed that they were able to get some big horror folks, such as Eli Roth, to attach their names to the project to lend it some credibility, but that doesn’t do enough for me. Given the trailer, this movie looks like a cross between the story and subject matter of The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the filming style of Paranormal Activity. In terms of the subject matter, it’s simply not new ground. This isn’t unusual given the most recent sling of horror trash, but something relatively new or at least forgotten isn’t too much to ask. I mean, honestly, we get it. The whole "man of faith angle" has been covered so many times. Perhaps most distracting though is when the film descends into quick cuts and recycled Paranormal Activity documentary style footage. Still, at the end of the day, as a horror fan and against better judgment, I know I’ll end up seeing this one way on down the line when I’m bored or just desperate for a different movie. But until the desperation sets in, my guess is most folks can wait on this one.
