'Resident Evil: Afterlife' starring Milla Jovovich - trailer review

Resident Evil: Afterlife Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Spencer Locke Rating: NR Release Date: January 14, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 7/10

MY THOUGHTS: Resident Evil has a lot to live up to after Extinction which was easily the letdown of the series. However, Afterlife looks like it has the potential to revive the franchise. For fans of the series and/or video games, this one has promised to follow the games more closely so that could be an interesting development. However, this one seems aimed at die-hard fans as well as getting new recruits. While I’ll admit its my own bias, I’m not nuts about the whole 3D craze (not being able to see it certainly doesn’t help) so the fact that this movie spends about a quarter of its trailer bragging about its 3D technology has me a little worried. Spectacle helps sell a movie (Avatar proved that) but for me, it doesn’t make the movie even if it’s an action flick so I’m hoping it’s not all “eye-popping visual effects”. Also, I wouldn’t spend too much time watching the trailer trying to decipher a story, considering there isn’t too much being given away here. There are a couple of brief synopses out there, but this trailer doesn’t seem to want to give anything away except its use of 3D technology and the promise of more zombie violence, but that doesn’t sound too bad to me.
