'The Last Song' starring Miley Cyrus - trailer review

The Last Song Directed by: Julie Anne Robinson Starring: Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, Bobby Coleman Rating: PG Release Date: April 2, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 3/10

MY THOUGHTS: Looks like Miley Cyrus is trying angst on for size. The poppy teen stars in yet another Nicholas Sparks adaptation. Sure, the fact that they keep making his sappy books into movies pisses me off, but you know what kills me off even more? That people keep seeing them! This movie looks pretty awful, but I have no doubt that the casting of Cyrus will guarantee mild success at least. The movie revolves around emo Miley being shipped off to her dad’s small town for the summer. Of course, daddy didn’t love her enough or left when she was little (the trailer’s pretty vague on that) and so there’s conflict. Side note, Greg Kinnear stars as a dead-beat dad in probably the most unbelievable role of his lifetime. As per usual, first love finds her that summer and there’s some drama there … there’s also a weird scene with a carnival which is evidently Nicholas Sparks’ thing based off of The Notebook. Then again, that’s what most adaptations of his novels have been. Mommy and daddy issues? Check. First love? Check. Drama surrounding first love? Check. The Notebook lite if you will. Half the calories and only half the substance.
