I Love You Phillip Morris - international trailer review
I Love You Phillip Morris Directed by: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa Starring: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann Rating: R Release Date: April 30, 2010 (Limited)
TRAILER SCORE: 8/10
MY THOUGHTS: Remember when Jim Carrey wanted to be taken seriously as an actor? Yeah, I know, it seems like it was ages ago, but Carrey may finally have his wish with I Love You Phillip Morris. Sure it’s a return to his slapstick/physical comedy origins, but this film has something that few other Carrey films do. It has heart. Sure, based on the trailer it looks like there are going to be some mildly offensive gay stereotypes that are going to be perpetuated, but if that’s what gets audiences to see this movie, so be it. Carrey’s turn as a play-it-by-the-numbers safe guy turned gay con man looks like it could be a nice change of pace for the comedian. However, even more exciting is the role of Phillip Morris himself played by McGregor. His past performances prove that he has the comedic energy to keep up with Carrey while bringing a level of endearment to the role. Leslie Mann as Carrey’s wife seems an interesting but enjoyable choice. All in all, I Love You Phillip Morris could be career-defining for Jim Carrey and at least entertaining for the audience.
