Brothers stars Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tobey Maguire. Directed by Jim Sheridan, the helmer of both My Left Foot and Get Rich or Die Tryin', it is a remake of a famous Danish film from 2004 called "Brodre." Natalie Portman plays Grace Cahill, a mother of two and wife to a soldier named Sam (Maguire). When on his fourth tour of duty, Sam goes missing, which causes his brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) to take his place and comfort Grace and her children. However, things get messy as Sam returns and finds out that his wife and brother have developed a special kind of relationship of their own.
A critical note against the trailer: it's far too much of a roller coaster. Starting off with a song by The Fray is fine, and the moodal change with "Pride (In The Name of Love)" by U2 can only be expected once it is revealed that Sam is still alive. But the end of the trailer is just chaotic, as it flashes and slams on and off like some horror trailer. Yes, we understand that Tobey Maguire is going to be firing off all cylinders in what will likely be a very dramatic third act, but this is a bit much. Also, is it possible that the trailer ends with one of the last scenes in the film?
Coming out on December 4, 2009, this has the placement of Oscar material. Obviously, whether it will be deserving of it remains to be seen. For now, I'll just be happy that a film has finally made use of of the near clone like resemblence of Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal.
