SXSW film review

The FP

Directors & Writers: Jason Trost & Brandon Trost For years an underground war has raged for dominance over the town of Frazier Park between two clans. Dominance isn't determined through fistfights or petty brawls, but the dancing video game Beat-Beat Revelation. Cast: Jason Trost, Lee Valamassy, Caitlyn Folley, Art Hsu, Nick Principe (World Premiere)

WHO'S IT FOR? The Trost brothers described the perfect audience as people who want to enjoy making fun of a Bruckheimer film. I would agree, as long as you lower your expectations.

OVERALL

Welcome to The FP. Also known as Frazier Park. Two rival gangs have been fighting for supremacy for years. Everything attempts to be over the top with the flick, including the way they fight ... Beat-Beat Revelation. They play it straight and that's the joke. Unlike films such as Shooter, where the joke is clearly on them.

Moments like a boob simply falling out are funny little background moments. Other things like JTRO (Jason Trost) actually having terrible footwork while he plays Beat-Beat ... yeah, I don't really know what to make of it. It keeps going back and forth between pretty funny to just average stuff. Art Hsu as KCDC will be the make or break character of the flick as an Asian with a "gift" for spinning a phrase. Does the training sequence push far enough or is it actually just an imitation of Rocky IV? It's easy to sit through but that doesn't mean you'll be raving about it.

FINAL SCORE: 5/10
