PLOT (courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment): After losing her job, husband and car in one day, Tammy Banks (McCarthy) wants out of her small town existence. With no money or transportation, her only way out is with her hard-partying grandmother, Pearl (Sarandon). Their misadventures and brushes with the law lead them on a funny and heartfelt road trip to remember.

MOVIE:

I believe this is the closest we will see Melissa McCarthy achieve her The Jerk. What I mean is, you can feel how personal this is for McCarthy. I don't mean the particular journey of an oddball woman taking her grandmother on a road trip, what I'm talking about it the humor, and the soul. This is the McCarthy she wants you to love. This is the character is wants to create. Thankfully, it's the one I want to see. The comedy isn't about a bigger woman running out of breath very quickly, it's about a vulgar, yet sweet-natured woman who doesn't know much, but wants to know more. She's confident because she's not. Tammy is a wonderful mess.

McCarthy is not alone. Susan Sarandon does a wonderful job losing herself in the older character of Pearl. Kathy Bates remains solid in all that she does, and the same goes for Allison Janney. Mark Duplass continues to charm, and he's on my short list of "guys who I want to make sure I pay attention to for a long time." Nat Faxon and Toni Collette are a surprising comedic couple.

With that cast, it's still McCarthy's story, and I hope she gets the chance to create more characters like this one.

MOVIE SCORE: 7/10
