PLOT: A nice rest in a state mental hospital beats a stretch in the pen, right? Randle P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a free-spirited con with lightning in his veins and glib on his tongue, fakes insanity and moves in with what he calls the "nuts." Immediately, his contagious sense of disorder runs up against numbing routine. No way should guys pickled on sedatives shuffle around in bathrobes when the World Series is on. This means war! On one side is McMurphy. On the other is soft-spoken Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), among the most coldly monstrous villains in film history. At stake is the fate of every patient on the ward. WHO'S IT FOR? Anyone of any age who is a fan of film.
MOVIE:
How many movies can claim they are a genre all to themselves? One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest IS the mental hospital genre. It's Kind of a Funny Story is about to hit screens with Zach Galifianakis. It's simply the light version of Cuckoo. Girl, Interrupted is Cuckoo with ladies. I could go on, but I want to get back to talking about this film.
The names associated with this film are outstanding. Nicholson is at the top of his game. The "inmates" range from DeVito, Lloyd, Will Sampson and Vincent Schiavelli (looking as bizarre as ever). Plus, if you don't love Scatman Crothers, then you don't love America. His voice alone is worth the price of a rental. Michael Douglas is a producer on this film. It's his first time doing it and he fought hard for this movie to get made. I haven't even mentioned the best part. It's Nurse Ratched. So evil. So relentless. The end result for her need for control will give you the constant need to throw something at your TV. Don't. It's not worth it. Instead, buy it on Blu-ray, enjoy the extras below and rewatch this film once every three years to understand what great cinema is all about.
