With a respectable $35.4 million opening, J.J. Abrams' Spielbergian Sci-fi Super 8 won top honors handily this weekend, and fared comparably to similar releases of the past -- e.g. Cloverfield's $40.1 million and District 9's $37.4 million.
In it's second weekend, X-Men: First Class, bowed out of the number one slot, only due to the fairly highly anticipated Super 8, and brought in another $24.1 million, bringing it just shy of $100 million total.
The Hangover Part II had another good turn ($17.7 million), and when the weekend's smoke had settled, the film found itself at the top of the heap -- it's now the number one highest grossing film of 2011 to date. I'm personally hoping that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon can take the motley Hangover crew down a couple notches. That's probably a fair bet. It just wouldn't sit right with me if The Hangover Part II held on to 2011's top honors.
Quite curiously, the weekend's only other major new release, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, which debuted at 2,524 theaters domestically, fared abysmally and brought in a mere $6 million. This big bummer of a flop brought in less than $3,000 per screen, and ranked 7th at the box office. Kung Fu Panda 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides rounded out this weekend's top 5 at the box office. With another moderate plunder of $11 million, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides leapt past Fast Five in the total gross column, and is currently the 2nd highest grossing film of the year.
