This weekend’s releases seem to be aware that it’s not too likely they’ll be able to top Toy Story 3 but other studios are still giving it a shot. The Adam Sandler comedy Grown-Ups brings a whole lot of other names to the table, such as Kevin James, David Spade, and Chris Rock among others, which may be a box office draw for this one. Knight and Day sees Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up to take a crack at the action-comedy genre.
As much as Sony and Fox may hate to hear this, it’s hard to imagine anybody topping Toy Story 3 this weekend, but better luck next time, folks! The animated flick has the distinct advantage of drawing in younger kids and their parents, while also drawing in fans of the original who are all grown up now. Still, that’s not a total death sentence for this weekend’s releases. While none of ‘em may bring home the bacon quit like Ham and his other Toy Story buddies, there’s still hope for Sandler and company. Grown-Ups has plenty of names and marketing behind it to secure the number two spot this weekend.
Knight and Day may tried to generate buzz with a midnight opening, but that has the potential to distract from its weekend box office earnings. In what could be a tight race, studio execs hoping to push for bigger buzz may have given the flick the kiss of death.
In other news, The Karate Kid may be bringing up the rear in fourth. Fans of the reboot have definitely fallen off since its opening several weeks ago and with the likes of Toy Story 3, it’s hard to compete. The A-Team has pretty much consistently under performed since its release so there’s no reason to think this week will be any different.
Each week we’ll take a look at the box office and see if we can’t nail the Top 5 films (in correct order). It’s harder than you think. If you don’t believe, let’s see what your answers are. My prediction for the weekend of June 18 – June 20 …
1. Toy Story 3 2. Grown Ups 3. Knight and Day 4. The Karate Kid 5. The A-Team
So what are your Top 5 at the box office this weekend?
