News: Former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista has been cast as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Thoughts by TSR: I’ve said numerous times that I’m really excited for Guardians of the Galaxy, so I’m paying attention to every bit of news. Dave Bautista’s casting doesn’t have me anywhere near as thrilled as Chris Pratt playing Star-Lord, but it’s still worth noticing. While names like Isaiah Mustafa (the Old Spice guy), Patrick Wade, and Jason Momoa from “Game of Thrones” were in the running, Bautista is the pick to play Drax the Destroyer. Drax started out as a human. Then, after being killed, was resurrected as a green warrior hell-bent on getting revenge on his killer, Thanos (the purple fellow who popped up during the credits of The Avengers). I don’t know if Bautista can act – I missed The Man with the Iron Fists last year – but he certainly is an imposing presence. I’ll go ahead and trust James Gunn and Marvel on this one.
So, two down, three to go. We’re still awaiting word on who will play Rocket Raccoon, tree-man Groot, and Gamora, who was raised by Thanos to be a weapon before she ultimately turned on him. I’m especially excited to find out who they get to voice Rocket Raccoon. But that will come in time. Guardians of the Galaxy is currently set for a 3D release on August 1, 2014.
