Thoughts by TSR: As if I wasn’t already excited about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, now one of my very favorite actors is coming on board. Coming Soon broke the news of Gary Oldman’s casting and Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. hears he'll be playing Dreyfus, leader of the human resistance against the apes. With Oldman and Jason Clarke involved, this film might actually feature some humans worth rooting for, something Rise of the Planet of the Apes lacked (give or take John Lithgow).
Matt Reeves’ sequel is set to start production in the spring, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it comes together. Still no new plot details, but we know it’s set 15 years after the first film and follows both a group of scientists in San Francisco and Caesar (Andy Serkis) attempting to maintain control over his apes. All the news (including the recent casting of Reeves’ Let Me In star, Kodi Smit-McPhee) has me very optimistic. I had no expectations for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, so hopefully my excitement won’t go to waste this time. Either way, we’ll all have a chance to find out on May 23, 2014 when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters.
