Thoughts by TSR: Robert Downey Jr. had been linked to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice for a while, but apparently that’s not happening. THR is reporting that he passed, and now a new name is in talks to star: Joaquin Phoenix. As much as I would have liked to see Downey Jr. work with PTA – anything to get him out of the Tony Stark/Sherlock Holmes cycle he’s been in the past few years – this news has me even more excited. Phoenix has never been better than as Freddie Quell in The Master – impressive considering there’s plenty of competition from Two Lovers, I’m Still Here, Quills, and more – so for him to be working with Anderson again is great news.
I haven’t read Thomas Pynchon’s novel, but it seems like something Anderson will have some fun with. It’s about a pot-smoking Los Angeles detective who is working on a kidnapping case in 1969-1970. Anderson has been working on the adaptation for a few years now, and we likely won’t have to wait quite as long for this as we did between There Will Be Blood and The Master. That is excellent news for people who like good things. With Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures providing the financing, I’d say there are plenty of reasons to be excited about Paul Thomas Anderson’s next project.
