TSRn: Zack Snyder Working on a 'Seven Samurai'-inspired 'Star Wars' Film

The Scorecard Review news

News: Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is working on a standalone Star Wars film that will be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Source: Vulture

Update:

From TheHollywoodReporter.com ... Snyder's spokesman told THR, "While he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia."

Thoughts by TSR: Zack Snyder told the LA Times that he wasn’t interested in directing the seventh Star Wars film. Perhaps that is because he had something else in the works, namely a Star Wars film that isn’t part of the upcoming trilogy. As Vulture reports, Snyder’s film will be an “as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers.” I’m not a huge fan of the franchise, nor have I checked Seven Samurai off my personal list of shame, but this sounds cool enough – I, for one, am already more interested in this than Star Wars: Episode VII. Snyder’s style should give us some spectacular lightsaber battles, though hopefully there is more to it than that.

Exactly when this will take place within the series' chronology is unclear, but Vulture says it will run parallel to the upcoming trilogy and be set after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Production would begin after things get rolling on Star Wars: Episode VII, a film that still hasn’t named a director. While we wait for that, I guess this news will have to tide over Star Wars fans, for better or worse.
