Thoughts by TSR: The first Expendables film was a bit of a bust, creatively speaking. Still, it made $274 million worldwide, which was good enough to get a sequel. Usually I wouldn’t have any interest in a sequel to an action film I didn’t much care for, but new director Simon West is putting together one heck of a cast. A couple weeks ago I wrote about the increased roles for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. That is a good start after their cameos left many people cold in the original. Next Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris were confirmed. Add those four to the returning cast from the first film – Stallone, Statham, Lundgren, Crews, Rourke, Li – and I can’t help but be cautiously optimistic.
Deadline is now reporting that Liam Hemsworth, younger brother of Thor’s Chris Hemsworth, is also joining the cast. I can’t say I’m familiar with his work – sorry Miley Cyrus fans, I never got around to seeing The Last Song – but next March we’ll all get a little more acquainted with the younger Hemsworth. He’ll be playing one of the main characters in The Hunger Games, and that is sure to boost his stock. Hopefully some of his brother’s charisma has rubbed off on him. If he does share a bit of his brother’s screen presence, Liam Hemsworth might be able to stand out opposite the already large cast of The Expendables 2.
