15 minutes of James Cameron's new film, Avatar, to play for free in IMAX

Titanic director James Cameron is making another giant splash with his upcoming film Avatar, an original sci-fi epic that is rumored to have a budget of about $230 million. At Comic-Con in San Diego yesterday, he finally unveiled 25-minutes of footage from his 3-D film to a "deeply enthusiastic, if not over-the-top hysterical crowd." Though some of Avatar was shown last month in Amsterdam at Cinema Expo, Fox has stated that what was shown at Comic-Con was not identical.

Now, Cameron and Fox Studios are going to share of this magic with all of America as they are planning to show 15-minutes from the film on as many IMAX and 3-D screens as possible. The previews will be absolutely free, and will take place on one day only - August 21st.

Why is Avatar such a big deal, despite having no trailers or posters? Apparently, it is going to be somewhat like the second coming of cinema.

In the past few months, famous directors like Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven trilogy) have seen bits of footage, and have nothing but praise. Favreau said that Avatar will be "a game-changer," and that "it's the future." Soderbergh's shining bald head must of exploded when he saw bits of Avatar, as he is famous in the film-geek world for saying, "I've seen some stuff and holy sh*t. It's the craziest sh*t ever. That could negate everything I just said."

Amy Pascal head of Sony, stated to Forbes Magazine that "I think everyone is in anticipation thinking it's going to be like Star Wars. [Avatar] is going to change the way you consume entertainment. I don't know that it will ever be the way you see dramas, but I can't say anymore that it won't be."

And not for nothing, Steven Spielberg has predicted it will be the biggest live-action 3-D film ever.

What is Avatar? The details are still a bit vague. But we will all be able to witness what sounds like the spark of a cinema revolution when footage of the film comes to as many IMAX and 3-D screen as possible on August 21st.
