New this Week: 'Colombiana,' 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' and 'Secret Sunshine (BD)'

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Colombiana - Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, Callum Blue Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison Our Idiot Brother - Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel Brighton Rock (limited) - Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Serkis

Movie of the Week

Colombiana

The Stars: Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, Callum Blue

The Plot: After witnessing her parents' murder as a child in Bogota, a young woman (Soldana) grows up to be a stone-cold assassin.

The Buzz: Not a lot of buzz, and not a lot of competition. However, Zoe Saldana looks pretty awesome in the trailer, taking the bull by the horns and dishing out sweet revenge, and it's cool to see Michael Vartan's along for the ride too. I wasn't surprised to learn that Luc Besson wrote the screenplay, as the whole deal has a very La Femme Nikita vibe to it. I'm relatively interested in checking this one out, much more so than this weekend's other wide releases.

Every Friday we'll have new reviews of the latest films.

New Blu-ray and DVDs released this week:

Secret Sunshine [Criterion] (BD/DVD) - Do-yeon Jeon, Kang-ho Song, Yeong-jin Jo

Blu-ray/DVD of the Week

Secret Sunshine

The Stars: Do-yeon Jeon, Kang-ho Song, Yeong-jin Jo

The Plot: Sin-ae moves with her son Jun to Miryang, the town where her dead husband was born. As she tries to come to herself and set out on new foundations, another tragic event overturns her life.

The Buzz: Not a lot of buzz, and absolutely zero competition. I'm in an awkward situation here, as I've never seen this film, and I'm not fit to comment -- it wins BD of the Week by default.

Of course, if Criterion picks it up, it's worthy of a viewing.
