Movie of the Week
Life as We Know It
The Stars: Josh Duhamel, Katherine Heigl The Plot: Two single adults (Heigl and Duhamel) become caregivers to an orphaned girl when their mutual best friends die in an accident. The Buzz: Will Katherine Heigl's fifth straight romantic-comedy be sweet redemption or a further slide down the spiral? With the boyish charm of Josh Duhamel in tow, I'd bet on redemption. This pair's chemistry looks to be better than previous Heiglian pairings (see Ashton Kutcher, Gerard Butler). It'll be interesting to see if Duhamel follows this up with more romantic comedies; Heigl had that affect on Butler, so again, I'd bet on such. And if the answer to that question is a function of this film's success, then I've gotta say I hope it bombs, as I'd rather see Duhamel commit his career to <sigh> yes, Transformers 4, 5 and 6, than to see him in romantic-comedy after romantic-comedy after romantic-comedy. But that's just me.

The Last of the Mohicans: Director's Definitive Cut (BD)
The Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis & Madeleine Stowe The Plot: Three trappers protect a British Colonel's daughters in the midst of the French and Indian War. The Buzz: Oscar-winning sound meets Blu-ray technology. Need I say more? I am so super-stoked that Mohicans has finally come to BD. The score, the cinematography, the story, the acting, the ever-present craftsmanship of Michael Mann, everything, is just spot on here. I adore this film. The romance is pure and beautiful, the action slash adventure is top class, and it's all brilliantly set amidst the colonial conflicts of 1757, a truly fascinating piece of history.
