Monthly Movie Preview - June 2010 - 'A-Team' to 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'

Monthly Movie Preview – June 2010 It’s difficult to say where the blockbuster season begins. On one hand, there were some highly anticipated releases for the month of May, such as Iron Man 2 but with June, the kids are out of school and summers in full swing. For a movie theater, this can be a blessing and a curse. Sure, there’s a lot more free time for the kids, but how do you compete with 78 degrees and sunny? The answer? Any way that you can.

June is proof of that, kicking off the summer season with some of the best that this year has to offer. For fans of the more explicit comedy to something a little more family friendly, June seems to have it all. Sure, June has to fight for the attention of audiences, but if this month’s line-up Is any indication, movie studios are ready to go to war.

Movie of the Week

Get Him to the Greek

The Stars: Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Rose Byrne The Plot: Music underling Aaron Green (Hill) has exactly 48 hours to get eccentric Aldous Snow (Brand) from his home in London to the Greek theater in LA. The Buzz: This is clearly for fans of director Nicholas Stoller’s previous work, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Although no Kristen Bell this time around (Maybe a cameo? Please?), Brand and Hill are back. The trailers promise plenty of inappropriate laughs and gross out humor. This movie offers plenty of cameos from some of music’s finest and the return of P Diddy to acting. It should be some solid summer comedy fare.

The Others:

Killers - Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Catherine O’Hara Marmaduke - Judy Greer, George Lopez, Owen Wilson Splice - Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley

The A-Team

The Stars: Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Jessica Biel The Plot: A group of Iraq War veterans must survive outside the law and seek to clear their names after being framed for a crime they didn’t commit. The Buzz: Is it an original plot? God no. I mean, besides it being a movie adaptation of a TV series, it’s a plot that been done to death. But what it does bring to the table is a shirtless Bradley Cooper for some and plenty of guilty pleasure material and explosive fun for others. By the end of the trailer it’s hard to take this as anything but fun. Oh yeah, there was no way I was going to pick The Karate Kid reboot as movie of the week.

The Others:

The Karate Kid - Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson

Movie of the Week

Toy Story 3

The Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack The Plot: The story picks up after Andy’s grown and going off to college. It’s up to Buzz (Allen), Woody (Hanks) and Jesse (Cusack) to keep the gang together after being dumped off at a day care center. The Buzz: It’s hard to believe that even animated kids grow up so fast. Toy Story has always been a great franchise. The first movie is great and the second one is even better. I’m hoping this is the case with the third one and that some things really do get better with age. Plus, some fun new additions to the voice cast ought to spice things up a little.

The Others:

Jonah Hex - Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox

Movie of the Week

Grown Ups

The Stars: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Salma Hayek The Plot:Five old friends who’ve lost touch decide to re-kindle their friendship with a weekend getaway with their families after being brought together by the passing of their former basketball coach.. The Buzz: To me, this movie kind of looks like Happy Gilmore’s The Big Chill, but it was either this or Knight and Day. Yeah, it seems June doesn’t end on a strong suit, but this movie has potential for some funny parts judging by the trailer. Plus, Salma Hayek proved she can do comedy on “30 Rock” last season, let’s hope they use her well in this one.

The Others:

Knight and Day - Cameron Diaz, Tom Cruise, Peter Saarsgard

Movie of the Week

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

The Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Bryce Dallas Howard The Plot: Bella's (Stewart) about to graduate high school, and once again she is forced to choose between her love for the vampire Edward (Pattinson) and her friendship with the werewolf Jacob (Lautner). The Buzz: Come on, I don't really have to explain the buzz for this film, do I? So, you may ask why this is the movie of the week. That's because it opens on a Wednesday, on June 30. So technically it's the only wide-release film opening this week in June. It wins on a technicality.
