TSRn: J.J. Abrams to Direct 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

Thoughts by TSR: After being successfully courted by Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams is the guy who will direct Star Wars: Episode VII. I guess this makes sense, doesn’t it? I was skeptical that he’d be chosen, what with being behind Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, but J.J. Abrams does seem like a good fit for the Star Wars universe. The Wrap was told that Argo’s Ben Affleck was also in the running. I’m glad he didn’t get it because I’d much rather see Affleck continue making the types of films he’s doing. Abrams, on the other hand, I’m perfectly happy to see get in on another franchise (especially considering I wasn’t a huge fan of his original Super 8).

Hopefully Star Trek fans don’t get too mad at Benedict Abrams, but the effect this has on his relationship with Paramount could be interesting. We’ll have to see what happens when the time comes for the eventual third Star Trek film. Speaking of which, he’s still in post-production on Star Trek Into Darkness, so he’ll be moving right into Star Wars ahead of the 2015 release date Disney set.

Frankly, I’m not all that invested in this either way. That (possibly false) report about Zack Snyder doing a standalone film set in the Star Wars universe was much more interesting to me. J.J. Abrams had a hand in “Lost,” a show I unabashedly love, so I’ll always have a little fondness for him. I’m just not going to be among those camping out in front of the theater.
