Inglorious Bastards release date and Watchmen featurette

Here’s the press release from TWC annoucing a war movie that has the potential to be THE GREATEST WAR FLICK OF ALL TIME!.. too much? Have I already over-hyped? Sorry, here’s the info …
December 31, 2008 – The Weinstein Company (TWC) and Universal Pictures announced today that Academy Award-winning director Quentin Tarantino’s World War II epic, Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt, will open domestically August 21, 2009. The announcement was made by Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of TWC and David Linde, co-chairman of Universal Pictures who are partners in the film. TWC and Universal are co-financing and co-presenting the film with TWC handling domestic distribution and Universal handling international distribution. International release dates will be announced shortly.

Watchmen, Arrested Development, and more…

Don’t worry, the Watchmen is still coming.

Fox has been trying to block Warner Bros. from the March release of the film Watchmen.

They say they own some rights to the film based on the most popular graphic novel of all time. Warner Bros. is ignoring them, but it all likelihood, they will have to open up their wallet, and hand some cash to Fox just to get them to shut up.

But all signs still point to March 6 when you can see Billy Crudup, Jackie Earle Haley and Carla Gugino — sorry, I mean — Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach and Silk Spectre.

There has been talk that Arrested Development has been down two cast members. Michael Cera and Will Arnett had not signed on yet. Well, it sounds like we can ... Continue Reading

Marley and Me was the no-brain winner of the box-office this weekend. Just think what it could have done if Bedtime Stories (and it’s insanely low Rotten Tomatoes score) would not have come out.

KATE WINSLET, nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, THE READER:
“Playing April Wheeler and Hannah Schmitz, two strong and complex characters was a true gift. To be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for both performances is a genuine honor and I am incredibly grateful. I am forever thankful to my husband Sam Mendes, Leo and fellow cast members and for Justin’s beautiful script. I am equally proud to share this day with Stephen Daldry and David Hare.”

Hoffman, Fincher and others about Golden Globe Nominations

With the Golden Globe nominations out, that means people need to be happy and humble.

Alien Trespass starring Eric McCormack to debut in January

Maybe it’s because I recently saw The Day the Earth Stood Still, and was completely underwhelmed, but Alien Trespass seems like a tough sell. Simply the names Urp and Ghota are going to be tough to work through. The one thing it does have going for it is the 1950’s. The problem with recent alien invasion flicks is that we have to spend time with technology (cell phones and news casts) instead of focusing on characters.

First-Look Production Still: Edward Norton’s ‘Leaves of Grass’

Is there any actor better than Ed Norton right now?.. OK, the answer is probably yes. But please remember this is the man from Fight Club, American History X and The Painted Veil (which more people should have seen)… Well, maybe “Leaves of Grass” will bring him back. I mean, there’s two of him. What could go wrong?

HollywoodChicago.com — TSR’s news partner — just published a first-look production still for the comedic thriller “Leaves of Grass” in which Edward Norton stars as twin brothers. The film, which recently wrapped production in Shreveport, La., is due out in 2010. It also stars Richard Dreyfuss, Keri Russell and Susan Sarandon.

Will Smith to Green Light New Version of ‘The Karate Kid’ With Kid Jaden Smith

Sometimes rumors do become true. Will Smith will produce a new version of “The Karate Kid” with his 10-year-old kid, Jaden Smith, in the starring role. The confirmed news surfaced this week in contrast to denied reports from a year ago that Will Smith was planning to wax on a remake of the 1984 classic “The Karate Kid”.

November ‘08 Monthly Movie Preview

If you haven’t heard … November will be the most important month in our lifetime. And from what I understand it has nothing to do with the latest Bond film.

Go vote.

Before we look forward, let’s take a look back at October.

There was just an insane amount of films released. Nobody even had time to focus on films like How to Lose Friends and Alienate People or Flash of Genius. And there was no film to dominate the box office except Beverly Hills Chihuahua, which I have decided I can’t fully rip on since I haven’t sat through it. It almost sounds worth it.

Here’s a quick list of the best of October.

5. City of Ember

Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Plot: Didn’t you read the title? Two friends (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks) are out of cash and attempt to make some money through amateur porn.

Crawford on Hulu.com for free

I saw Crawford in the Spring at SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin, Texas. It’s a film all about the tiny little town of Crawford, TX and the man that moved there. It’s a good documentary that gives yet another angle to President George W. Bush and his political machine.

An independent film can be a tough sell and Crawford is the first film to make it’s debut on Hulu.com–a Web site completely worth checking out, if nothing else for it’s “Saturday Night Live” collection.

And here’s an email from the Crawford team … I recommend checking out the film on hulu.com.
After 3 years of filmmaking, we’re thrilled to say: CRAWFORD is yours!

On our new website you’ll find a beautiful double-disc DVD, replete with some truly incredible extras

One Minute: An Interview with Leonardo DiCaprio from Body of Lies

Can we ignore the fact that Body of Lies failed to hit the top two at the box office this weekend? Instead let’s focus on the positive, like this Reuters article.

And by the way … this opening will kill chances for Body of Lies to get any notice come awards season. Unless this is a very poor year for Best Supporting Actor, and then maybe Russell Crowe and his 45 extra pounds will get a nomination.

By Bob Tourtellotte

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Born of Hollywood, acting as a teenager, Oscar-nominated by age 19, Leonardo DiCaprio is a product of the film studio’s star-making machine.

View the Synecdoches, New York website here. Sony Pictures released this statement …

The website for writer Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut “SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK,” was designed and programmed by 1 Trick Pony, in coordination with Sony Pictures Classics and the filmmakers. Those entering the site can view full profiles of the main Cast and Crew, as well as ‘Synopsis,’ ‘Trailer’ and ‘Reviews & Links’ sections. These sections include cartoon/animations developed by Corduroy Road Productions (who also produced the animation seen in the film). Kirk Cameron, box office star. Whoever had that in your office pool from 1987, congrats, it’s time for your co-workers to finally pay up. Fireproof is Cameron’s latest film that is closely tied to religion. It was only released on 839 screens which means Cameron’s film had BY FAR the highest per screen average of the top 5.

Eagle Eye did what it was supposed to do, and LaBeuof will continue to get starring roles because of it. I just hope he doesn’t simply continue with the action genre. He’s got a small role in New York ... Continue Reading

Box Office Preview - September 26, 2008

Opening this weekend:

Eagle Eye
Fireproof
Miracle at St. Anna
Nights in Rodanthe
Choke
Forever Strong
The Lucky Ones

And we have plenty of reviews this week. Three for Eagle Eye (trying something new with a plethora of opinions), two for Miracle at St. Anna, and then we also review The Lucky Ones, Choke, and Nights in Rodanthe.

This was my week of high hopes. I was expecting big things out of Spike Lee, Shia LaBeouf and Sam Rockwell. I guess I’ll wait until next time.

And now it’s time for everyone’s (or at least 12 people’s) favorite new game … Here’s how it works, just decide the order. Points are awarded as such …
#1 at the box office = 5 points
2 = 4 points
3 = 3 points
4 = 2 points
5 = 1 point

Your goal: Try to beat us. Our ... Continue Reading

WEEKEND TOP 5 STUDIO ESTIMATES, SEPTEMBER 19-21, 2008

1. Lakeview Terrace - $15.6 million
2. Burn After Reading - $11.3 million
3. My Best Friend’s Girl - $8.3 million
4. Igor - $8.0 million
5. Righteous Kill - $7.7 million

Well, I was right. But unfortunately it was only once. Lakeview Terrace claimed the number one spot. Here’s how the Box Office Preview game played out for Sept. 19…

Bayer, Pohl and Pardee tie. No winners (for the staff) again this week. But Kyle comes out of nowhere and proves sun shines on a dog’s arse every once in a while. Well done Kyle, almost perfect nailing the first four spots for a total of 14 points. Feel free to talk all the trash you want. ... Continue Reading

Box Office Preview - September 19, 2008

The new films getting wide release this week are:

Lakeview Terrace - 6/10, reviewed by Pohl
Igor - I’ve seen the trailer, and I’m not impressed with the animation, yet another Cusack miss
My Best Friend’s Girl - no screening in Portland, that smells like a stinker
Ghost Town - 4/10, reviewed by Bayer

Let’s play a game. We attempted this last week, but we’re calling that the preseason.
It’s time to predict the Top 5 at the box office this weekend.
Here’s how it works, just decide the order. Points are awarded as such …

#1 at the box office = 5 points
2 = 4 points
3 = 3 points
4 = 2 points
5 = 1 point

Your goal: Try to beat us.
Our goal: Prove our dominance.

Just add your predictions below, and yes, it’s kind of cheating if ... Continue Reading

October ‘08 Monthly Movie Preview

With leaves changing, the weather cooling and football fully caked into the air (and weekend plans) it’s time to start thinking ahead of the spend your time in the theaters.

Here’s a quick guide to October movies, but before we get to that, let’s talk about the biggest disappointment this fall. “Saturday Night Live.” Currently 0-2, with Michael Phelps and James Franco hosting the first two episodes there has been one great sketch (Tina Fey as Sarah Palin), and one great idea (James Franco as Agent 420). That’s it. How could they not spend the entire summer thinking and planning? If nothing else every single season premiere should have a sketch of all the things they missed making fun of during the summer.

The good news … Anna Faris is hosting 9/28 ... Continue Reading

Wow, no one saw movies this last weekend. I assume this was due to some football. Both college football and the NFL were in full swing this weekend, and next to Nic Cage in an action movie, there wasn’t much of a choice.

Bruce Springsteen adds song to Aronofsky’s Wrestler

Bruce Springsteen is back to working on soundtracks. Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) has gotten the Jersey native to craft a song for the final credits to his new film The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke. This quote is directly from Aronofsky’s blog.

off to venice on wednesday. but i wanted to just share with you all the other music news i talked about in the past post. bruce springsteen wrote a beautiful original song for the closing the film. called THE WRESTLER it is a wonderful acoustic piece. makes me choke up every time i hear it. he really captured the spirit of the film and mickey’s character in the piece.

Fall TV Preview 2008 (When do my new shows start?)

About a week ago, I tried to find a decent guide to the Fall TV season. It couldn’t be done, and Entertainment Weekly hadn’t completed their Fall TV issue yet, so I was lost.

Now I am found. The TV Addict designed a nice, printable guide to the Fall 2008 TV season.

I am shocked to learn that I have to wait until October 30, 2008 for the first “30 Rock” episode. And I assume I have to watch “Friday Night Lights” online this season since I don’t have DirecTV. Perhaps someone will explain.

Anyway, I fully believe their is more to life than movies, and the TV Addict clearly understands.

Robert Ebert attacks Jay Mariotti

Roger Ebert, the film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times wrote an open letter to Jay Mariotti, who recently quit the newspaper. This is the opening …

What an ugly way to leave the Sun-Times. It does not speak well for you. Your timing was exquisite. You signed a new contract, waited until days after the newspaper had paid for your trip to Beijing at great cost, and then resigned with only an email. You saved your explanation for a local television station.

As someone who was working here for 24 years before you arrived, I think you owed us more than that. You owed us decency. The fact that you saved your attack for TV only completes our portrait of you as a rat.

A press release has announced that beginning today, DreamWorks Pictures is offering an original documentary “Rain Of Madness,” for download exclusively on the iTunes Store.

“Rain of Madness,” starring Jay Baruchel, Jack Black, Steve Coogan, Robert Downey Jr., Bill Hader, Nick Nolte and Ben Stiller is a companion piece to the hit comedy “Tropic Thunder,” which debuted in theaters nationwide on August 13, and serves as a documentary of the making-of the feature film. It was shot on location in Hawaii, at the same locations used in the feature film, and details the demise of the fictitious cast & crew of “Tropic Thunder”, as they struggle to finish shooting their film despite numerous shooting, budgeting and casting problems.

“We wanted to do a fake documentary about the making of the movie ... Continue Reading

Shia LaBeouf’s hand injury now part of Transformers

SCI FI Wire is now confirming that star Shia LaBeouf’s hand injury has become part of the film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. LaBeouf’s hand was injured in a car accident earlier in August. The film is hoping for a release date of June 26, 2009.
“Shia just got back to the set last week,” Roberto Orci, co-writer, said in an interview in New York on Aug. 25, where he was promoting his upcoming Fox TV series Fringe. “We incorporated his injury into it. Not because it was absolutely necessary, but [director] Michael [Bay] in particular wanted to be able to protect him on the set.”

“He’s still going to be running around in this movie,” said Orci. “[Bay] literally just wanted, for [LaBeouf's] safety, … to make sure that we weren’t ... Continue Reading

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves to summer July 19, 2009

Warner Bros. Pictures released the following statement…
Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that it has moved back the release date of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. The sixth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise will now open day-and-date domestically and in the major international markets on July 17, 2009. The announcement was made by Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros.

In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are ... Continue Reading
