I just finished reading the book. Actually the backstory on Hakan is that he was an alhoholic and Eli found him one day and told him that she would help him if he came and lived with her. Her approach was quite demanding and assertive and it's not explained much more than that. It was in his adult life not too long before this story. He was probably with her for about 10 years. The book makes Hakan out to be a disgusting loser so you never really feel sympathy for him. The reason he is sloppy is because he over-analyzes situations and I believe had killed so many people that he simply started to make mistakes over time. I haven't seen the movie yet, but am looking forward to it.

William,

I agree with you--that's probably the explanation behind Hakan, although I hate the idea that someday Eli and Oskar won't be together...

I just came from seeing this film. I've been waiting a long time to see it ever since I saw the trailer.

Real quick, I believe Hakan was once a boy who fell in love with Eli, just as Oskar did, and had been caring for Eli since. He was apparently becoming too old and his methods for getting her blood were becoming sloppy, which is why he decided that he could no longer care for her.
