Just when you thought that DVD and Blu-Ray packaging couldn’t get any better, the new home release of Star Trek is offering something that is going to blow our minds more severely than Nero did when he toasted Vulcan.
Fans will be able to take a tour of the famous USS Enterprise via “augmented packaging,” which requires owners of the DVD/Blu-Ray to “hold their disc packaging in front of any standard webcam to unlock an interactive hologram on the computer screen, through which they can tour five cabins on the Enterprise, even shooting enemies from the ship’s deck.”
Says Paramount home video senior VP of brand marketing Bob Buchi, “If you took the visual cue in the package and turned your hand, then you’re turning the ship.”
The technology has previously been used for such things as magazine covers. This is the first time it is ever being used for a DVD/Blu-Ray release.

Out on November 17th, Star Trek will be released in three different forms. There will be a one-disc DVD with director’s commentary, and a two-disc DVD with even more extras to go along with the feature film. The Blu-Ray version of Star Trek will be three discs. Both the two-disc DVD and Blu-Ray will include a digital copy of the film.
Among the extras will be deleted scenes that feature baby Spock, an abandoned storyline about that crazy Romulan captain Nero, and even a look at J.J Abrams’ idea of a Klingon warrior.
