Samuel L. Jackson to Play Nick Fury … Or Not
You may have seen his brief cameo at the end of this summer’s second highest grossing film, Iron Man. However, with things starting to get cloudy, there’s a possibility that Samuel L. Jackson will NOT be playing Nick Fury in Iron Man 2, The First Avenger: Captain America, or even the heavily anticipated Avengers movie.
So far, it has worked like this. The character of Nick Fury used to be rugged and white (and once played by David Hasselhoff). Then, Marvel changed the character to specifically model Samuel L. Jackson, which has (so far) made casting for the character very clear.
Jackson was essentially scheduled to be in the Iron Man sequel, the Captain America movie, and soon to be the Traveling Willburys of comic book movies, The Avengers.
However, when recently talking with the Los Angeles Times, Jackson said something that is causing a little bit of fury in the Marvel and movie world.
He said: “There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don’t know. Maybe I won’t be Nick Fury. Maybe someone else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won’t be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], ‘We’re not making that deal.’”
Nothing is certain as of this moment. As pointed out by the LA Times, this could be Jackson’s way of creating attention so that he receives a higher paycheck. At the same time, it could truly mean he won’t be playing the character Marvel has engineered for him to specifically embody. Stay tuned to see whether one of the comic book movie world’s best casting idea falls flat. With respect to such a furthering of Jackson’s greatness, we certainly hope not.

Talk about a ignorant article! “The character of Nick Fury used to be rugged and white” Ultimate Nick Fury is black moron!
Well, I suppose this is all a problem of technicalities.
Here’s a history lesson:
You see, Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, or rather, Colonel Nick Joseph Fury, used to be Caucasian, starting in his first appearance in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 back in May of 1963. After that first appearance, he maintained somewhat of the the same look, despite his placements in many Marvel comic books like The Avengers and Fantastic Four.
Now, things changed a bit in the Marvel Universe starting in 2000 with the re-introduction of classic Marvel characters, such as Iron Man, the Hulk, X-Men, and others. They were now “Ultimate”. “Ultimate Iron Man”, “Ultimate Spider Man”, etc.
With such a re-introduction came a drastic change to the character of Nick Fury. First making his appearance in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up (issue #5, I believe), there were a few things different about Fury. First, as you have pointed out, he became “Ultimate”. Fury also became a General. Third to that, this NEW version of Fury was bald-headed, which was different from the earlier gray-haired version. However, a fourth and most radical change made to the character of “Nick Fury” was his skin color. As stated, since 1963, “Nick Fury” used to be Caucasian. However, with the introduction of the Ultimate Marvel characters, “Nick Fury” became African-American, specifically modeled after the looks of Samuel L. Jackson, with the actor’s permission.
You are correct. Ultimate Nick Fury is black. But, I state that “Nick Fury” was, in the past, rugged and white, which is also technically correct. I was not talking about Ultimate Nick Fury, but rather the overall character of Nick Fury himself. Obviously, there have been some changes to the character since his introduction in 1963. But if you think that “Nick Fury” was not at one time white, well…you’d be a moron.
What does it matter….black or white? There are two different versions of him in the comic books. Does it really matter what version is in the movie. To state that black Nick Fury is a moron is ignorant. Grow up and get out of the 60’s. Being there are to versions of him it doesnt matter which is in the movie. It will still be correct.
“To state that black Nick Fury is a moron is ignorant”
when did anyone say that? it doesnt mattter if he is black or white. Nick was just pointing out some facts about Fury
read it again then comment, moron
Read it again darryl you idiot
Maybe you need to re-read it “Matt”.
“JJ” did say that the black Nick Fury(Ultimate) was a moron.
Leave those drugs alone, and you will be alright.
It seems you need to have your eyes checked Dee:
“Ultimate Nick Fury is black moron!” – JJ
JJ does not say black nick fury is a moron, he is calling Mr. Allen a moron for saying Nick Fury was white. If you are going to quote people you should get it right, especially if you are trying to make a point off it. An elementary level reading program should straighten that up.
Good try though…
haha ZING!
