Visual Effects Supervisor Scott Farrar – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

I sat down with Visual Effects Supervisor Scott Farrar and others in Los Angeles at the Four Seasons to talk about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and more. Farrar has worked on so many great movies my head hurts … Back to the Future, Return of the Jedi, and Minority Report just to name a few.

Bayer: So does Michael Bay say to you, “OK, we had 14 robots (in the first film) … we’re going to 46!”
Farrar: The way the whole thing starts is from the script. Then you read it and go, “Really? Michael? You sure?” Because let’s be honest there’s a money figure attached to building all these robots.

Bayer: At first is it nauseating or exciting?
Farrar: The one thing we are, we’re always up for a challenge, and the idea of bigger scope and scale. I mean, nobody shoots a movie like Michael Bay these days. These are big movie ideas. The locations alone were amazing, because if you have a 100-foot robot you need a big building behind it for scale.

Bayer: Do you have a favorite scene?
Farrar: I love the Devastator scene. It’s big movie stuff. This creature that’s sucking everything up.

Bayer: If you don’t mind, do you have any stories from Back to the Future that you can dive in to?
Farrar: We shot three months of nights, and then we were at the parking lot where terrorists are driving through the thing. Bob Gale and Bob Zemeckis gather everyone around. And they say, “We’ve been looking at dailies, and Eric Stolz is a great actor but we’ve just decided he’s not a comedic as we need. We’re going to go with Michael Fox, we tried to get him in the first place, his TV show prevented it. But he’s coming on, so we’re going to have to reshoot the three months that we just did.” And we did, unreal.
