Monthly Movie Preview – July 2010 – ‘Inception’ and ‘Dinner for Schmucks’

Monthly Movie Preview – July 2010

July has this weird way of sneaking up on me every year. June just seems to slip away and July comes out of nowhere. Unfortunately, when it comes to movies, evidently Hollywood feels the same way. The July seems like one of the most bare minimum month’s of release, but then again, that’s good news for some of these movie makers and not so great news for us in the audience.

Each week there’s a little something for the kids and a separate one for the adults, but at the rate of all the reboots (like Predators) and sequels, it seems like it’s a better time than for original material. Check it out for yourselves.

Movie of the Week

Despicable Me

The Stars: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Miranda Cosgrove
The Plot: Evil genius Gru has his heart stolen by a troop of orphan’s that forces him to re-think his evil plan of stealing the moon.
The Buzz: Trailers for this movie have been out for a long time, so I’ve had a while to get excited about this. The combination of a bumbling evil mastermind and a group of kids could easily be aggravating or childish, but from the looks of it, the rest of the cast seals the deal for me. There are some great names attached to this project so it should at least be fun to hear their contributions if nothing else.

The Others:

Predators – Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne
Grease: Sing along – John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John

Movie of the Week

Inception

The Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page
The Plot: The world is an unsafe place where even dreams can be stolen. The invasion of dreams is the premise for this special effects laden film.
The Buzz: Inception is one of those movies where the secrets of it have been kept pretty tightly under wraps. I’m still a little unclear on exactly what it’s about, but the stunning imagery is reason enough to see it alone. Plus, as most film geeks will tell you, it’s a Christopher Nolan movie so besides the visuals and the all-star cast, there are plenty of reasons to pay attention to this movie.

The Others:

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (July 14) – Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina
The Kids Are All Right – Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo

July 23

Movie of the Week

Salt

The Stars: Angelina Jolie, Live Schrieber, Chiwetel Ejiofor
The Plot: A case of mistaken identity (or is it?) sets things in motion for this Angelina Jolie spy thriller. Forced to run for the people she used to work for, Evelyn Salt must flee justice to clear her name.
The Buzz: Honestly, this story is tired by now. Still, if past Jolie action flicks are any indication, this movie will at least provide some impressive stunts that might make it worth watching. Like I said, it’s slim pickings this month.

The Others:

Ramona and Beezus – Joey King, Selena Gomez, John Corbett

July 30

Movie of the Week

Dinner for Schmucks

The Stars: Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, Ron Livingston
The Plot: A remake of the film The Dinner Game, friends have a contest to see who can bring the biggest loser to a dinner party.
The Buzz: It’s got great source material, and I really hope they don’t mess this one up. Besides the big two in this film (Rudd and Carell), we also have supporting roles from Zach Galifianakis and Bruce Greenwood. Let’s hope this one can keep up laughing through August.

The Others:

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore – Chris O’Donnell, Christina Applegate, Neil Patrick Harris
Charlie St. Cloud – Zac Efron, Amanda Crew, Donal Logue
Get Low – Robert Duvall, Bill Murray
